Large holiday cottages and homes in the Cotswolds: where a group should base itself
The north wolds hold the names everyone knows. Broadway and Chipping Campden are the handsome ones, all wide greens and golden stone, and Stow-on-the-Wold sits up on its hill between them. Moreton-in-Marsh is the practical one of the bunch, with a proper Tuesday market and direct trains from London. Base a group up here and the greatest hits sit within a short drive of the front door, which suits a first Cotswolds trip.
For a quieter week, look a village or two off the main routes: the high wolds around Notgrove and Andoversford, or the valley villages near Bourton-on-the-Water, which turn quiet again once the day-trippers have gone home. The Oxfordshire side is gentler country and well connected, with two of the prettiest stops on the London line: Kingham, all stone and quiet lanes, and Charlbury, worth an afternoon on its own. Burford and Stow are an easy drive from either. And the hills run further south than most people expect, down past Cirencester to where the wolds run out near Corsham, and the villages are quieter still.

Let the house choose the village, not the other way round. Group-sized houses are thin on the ground in any single Cotswold village, so start from the houses that genuinely fit everyone and weigh up their villages afterwards. It matters less than you might think: distances are relatively short in the Cotswolds, so a base near Moreton-in-Marsh or Kingham still puts Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow and Broadway within an easy drive.
Can a group of 15 or 20 stay together in the Cotswolds?
Yes, but the options narrow fast. Most large houses here sleep between eight and twelve; above that the choice jumps rather than climbs, with the biggest single house sleeping into the mid-twenties and little in between. The other route for a group that size is a courtyard of barns on one estate, let separately but sharing the grounds and a communal games room, so everyone stays on the same few acres without squeezing under one roof. Are the large Cotswolds houses dog-friendly?
More than half take dogs, which for walking country like this is just as well. The wolds are laced with footpaths, and most villages have at least one pub that will find the dog a corner.
