Where in Suffolk to base a group
Most groups start with the coast, and Suffolk's is a rare kind: shingle and salt marsh rather than bucket-and-spade, with fishing boats selling the morning's catch at Aldeburgh, Thorpeness's odd little boating mere just up the beach, and music at Snape Maltings a few miles inland. Woodbridge sits handsomely on the Deben estuary, Southwold's pier and beach huts make the classic day trip further north, and it all stays busy by Suffolk standards, which is to say not very. Head inland and mid Suffolk is deep countryside, with market towns like Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham for a day out and some of the county's grandest houses hidden down its lanes, where the trade-off for being twenty minutes from a beach is more land, more bedrooms and more room to spread into. To the south, Constable country follows the Stour valley, and the Orwell estuary brings sailing and riverside pubs nearly into Ipswich. Distances are short everywhere in Suffolk, so an inland base still puts the sea within an easy morning's reach.

Where in Suffolk is best for a large group?
It depends what the group wants more of. The coast around Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Woodbridge puts beaches, sailing and good fish within a short walk or drive. The bigger houses tend to sit inland, though, in the countryside around the market towns, with grounds and space a coastal spot rarely offers. Suffolk is compact enough that you can still reach the sea from an inland base in under half an hour.
What if our group is too big for one house in Suffolk?
The biggest single house here runs into the mid-thirties, so even a very large group can often stay under one roof. The other route is an estate arrangement, a main house with a converted barn or cottage on the same grounds: each part is booked separately, but everyone ends up sharing the same garden and the same long table.
Norfolk or Suffolk for a big group trip?
Norfolk has the bigger name and more large houses to choose from, most of them strung along its north coast. Suffolk is quieter and greener, with fewer but often grander houses, and a coastline that trades Norfolk's vast beaches for shingle, estuaries and Aldeburgh's particular charm. If the group wants beach days and the widest choice, start with Norfolk. If it wants a big house with grounds and nobody else around, Suffolk makes a strong case.
Are the large Suffolk houses dog-friendly?
Most will take a dog, and an off-season shingle beach is about as good as dog country gets. Not every house does, though, and some cap the numbers, so check the listing before the group falls for one.
